On February 9, 1971, the magnitude 6.6 San Fernando earthquake, known locally as the Sylmar quake, hit this neighborhood just after 6am.
Olive View had been open six weeks. Four five-story wings pulled away from the main structure and three of the stair towers went down.
Freeway overpasses at the interchange collapsed and cut the main north-south route. Sylmar rebuilt, and the codes from that morning now protect the state.

A Sea of Trees, Then a Neighborhood of Big Lots
Sylmar was renamed in 1893 from the Latin silva and mare, meaning sea of trees, for the olive orchards that once covered the whole area.
