New Year's Day, 1934
Just after midnight on January 1, 1934, after a November fire stripped the slopes above and December storms saturated them, mud and boulders came down the canyons.
Roughly four hundred homes were destroyed across La Crescenta, Montrose, La Canada, and Tujunga in a single night, and American Legion Post 288 was struck with people inside.
The county and the Army Corps then built the debris basins and conduits at the head of Pickens, Shields, Eagle, Blanchard, and Snover canyons, finished in 1938.

That history did not end in 1934. The 2009 Station Fire burned 160,577 acres of the Angeles National Forest, the largest wildfire recorded in Los Angeles County.
